Reference by R. Sutton (Oxford, June 2009)
Phil has been the tutor for two of my courses during my degree, one being Viscous Flow and the other being Perturbation Methods. In every class, Phil was friendly and approachable and would respond to questions using his own competency and ability as opposed to consulting pre written solutions. He would often provide the students with a summary handout, explaining the aims of the class and providing a 'knowledge checklist' for the end of each topic. Sometimes this would also cite further reading and even present supplementary material to give a different perspective on the material in the lecture notes. One thing I found very helpful when revising was table given to us by Phil referencing past exam question topics by year. This allowed me to quickly find a practice question to focus my attention on. Finally, Phil managed to create a relaxed atmosphere in the classes with a great deal of interaction between students, encouraging us to talk the problems over and explain solution methods to each other. I would definitely recommend Phil for any lectureship position.
