Phil was a teaching assistant for the Viscous Flow course in my third year and took the examination consultation sessions for the Perturbation Methods course in my fourth year. The consultation sessions were especially helpful---we were able to send in questions before hand and failing that, Phil prepared one or more worksheets that we would go through thoroughly during the session (which often lasted a few hours). Firstly, we'd attempt the questions ourselves, giving us a chance to push ourselves as far as possible, then go through them together. Part of the session would also cover general ideas about various topics, therefore giving us a sort of summary, which was very useful when approaching slightly different questions within the same topic. I found the sessions hard work, but enjoyable and definitely helpful as I was able to voice any questions I had and I knew I'd get a reasonable answer to them. I would definitely recommend Phil for a lectureship as he's one of few tutors that I've had during my four years who was truly interested in making sure we understood the Mathematics and were comfortable with approaching a variety of questions.
