Over the course of the year I have been in two classes taught by Phil Trinh. In Hilary term, Applied Complex Variables were the enemy. Each class began with a handout of several pieces of paper, one of which summarised the key concepts in that particular problem sheet, the other handouts contained supplimentary problems addressing the underlying theory. It was clear that a huge of time and effort went into the preparation of each class as Phil focussed on making sure that we understood the theory. I found this focus on covering theory rather than necessarily covering all the questions on the problem sheet extremely useful.

In Trinity term, I had revision classes on Perturbation Methods. These were sessions that had been organised to cover a particular topic each week. This was far more useful than other revision classes in which students turned up to ask individual questions, since this inevitably led to the same problem being expounded week after week. Again, Phil had taken the time to prepare problems that best covered and conveyed all the theory required. He went well beyond the call of duty over-running classes by hours in some cases to make sure that everything was covered and understood. In the four years that I have been at Oxford, these were undoubtedly the most useful classes that I had attended as they were well-prepared and well-taught. I would definitely recommend Phil as a very good teacher.
